Abstract
Phillips Petroleum Co. (Bartlesville, Oklahoma) built a new office complex in the 1980s to replace the obsolete Frank Phillips Office Building. The unique plan saved and incorporated the 14-story tower portion of the original building and encouraged staff involvement throughout the planning and design process. A full-scale office mock-up was constructed and opened for staff review and comment. The new complex now consists of: 1. the Plaza Office Building, a 15-story, 420,000-square-foot modern structure, 2. Frank Phillips Tower Center, an 85,000-square-foot dining, meeting, and medical facility, 3. two surrounding parks, 4. a 10,000-square-foot power plant expansion, and 5. an expanded tunnel system that provides a link to other Phillips-owned buildings and an employee parking lot. Because the goal was to create a functional, flexible office space, 171 subtle variations among employees' offices were sanctioned.
