Abstract
The newly constructed Noble Research Center on the Oklahoma State University campus represents a team effort by the school, The Architects Collaborative, and Frankfurt Short Bruza Associates. The myriad systems, which offer a range of solar energy techniques, are expected to save up to 90% on the facility's hot water bill, 91% on heating costs, and 36% on lighting. The structure's truss-supported atrium, located at the core of the university, gathers in southern light for passive solar heating, while its nearly windowless east-west exposures minimize summertime heat gain for lower cooling costs. Positioned on the outer surface of the building's slanted roof, motorized louvers ensure that the atrium does not overheat in summer. The 2-phase project will be linked via a peak-roofed solar court equipped for heat recovery. To enhance energy efficiency, each of the Noble Center lab modules has a bay window, with light shelves over the bay that bounce light into the labs from a 2nd, higher set of windows.
