Abstract
Massive platforms and extensive plazas loomed large in my first attempt to describe contemporary engagements with ancient Indigenous earthworks. The year was 1990. I was completing a master’s degree in creative writing at Washington University in Saint Louis, and thus I was living within the floodplain of “the river beyond all ages” in the shadow of what remains of the Mississippian city known as Cahokia. My first publication about earthworks was not a work of fiction or poetry, however, but a journalistic piece I wrote for <em>Nine</em> magazine, a promotional arm of the local PBS station.
